Background of Mto Wangu Initiative

Mto Wangu Initiative is a grassroots organization committed to addressing climate change, curbing environmental degradation, and revitalizing livelihoods in Mathare. Our core efforts revolve around effective waste management and the rehabilitation of the Mathare River, transforming riparian areas into lush green recreational spaces.

Mathare is a densely populated informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, with an estimated population of around 500,000 people. The area is characterized by high population density and significant economic hardship, with many residents living below the poverty line and relying on informal employment. Limited access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and healthcare further exacerbates the challenges faced by the community.

The settlement is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly flooding. Its location in a riparian zone and poorly constructed structures increase the risk of damage and casualties during floods. Other climate-related challenges include heat stress, landslides, and aridity, with inadequate infrastructure contributing to the community's vulnerability.

In Mathare, our work includes engaging local communities in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices, aiming to create green, vibrant ecosystems that enhance the quality of life. We focus on building resilience among women and youth, empowering them to navigate and adapt to environmental and climate-related challenges. We also offer reactive responses to disasters like flooding, epidemics among others, education empowerment and innovative, sustainable waste management solutions.

As part of the broader Mathare River Regeneration Network (MRRN), we collaborate with other community-based organizations to achieve a unified vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for all Mathare residents.
