Mto Wangu Initiative is a community-led organization dedicated to combating climate change, environmental degradation and restoring livelihoods in Mathare. We focus on waste management and the restoration of the Mathare River, transforming riparian zones into green recreational spaces. Our initiatives build resilience among women and youth, empowering them to better adapt to the environment and climate change challenges within the Mathare slums.
We engage in comprehensive environmental stewardship and community-driven projects, aiming to create sustainable, vibrant ecosystems and improve the quality of life for all residents. Join us in our mission to foster a greener, more resilient Mathare.

Roots Community Library
Roots Community Library has a been a hub that promotes literacy and boosts education and research. This vibrant library now serves as a cornerstone for learning and community growth in Mathare.

Mathare River Regeneration Network (MRRN)
Mto Wangu Initiative proudly serves as an affiliate executive organization for the Mathare River Regeneration Network. Our collaborative efforts focus on revitalizing the Mathare River ecosystem, promoting sustainable practices, and enhancing community involvement to foster a cleaner and greener environment.
Mathare Community Park
Mathare Community Park has been transformed from a dumpsite into a vibrant green space, providing a safe haven for recreation, environmental education, and community gatherings in the ghetto.
Rehabilitation and response to the March-May 2024 Flooding victims
Volunteers and partners initiated a program to help out various people who were affected by the flooding in Mathare between March and May 2024. Various organizations were mobilized to donate and offer psychological rehabilitation.

March - May Flooding in Mathare
From March to May 2024, Kenya experienced severe flooding, deeply impacting Mathare near the Mathare River. Urgently needed items included food, hygiene products, mattresses, blankets, and school supplies. There was a fundraiser to support Mto Wangu Initiative in providing essential aid and relocation assistance.
